Established in the Fall of 2005, Indy Pit Crew has been working tirelessly to raise public awareness about the plight of the pit bull. One of the biggest obstacles we face is inaccurate public perception. “Pit bull” is not a breed of dog. Instead, it is a slang term used to describe any number of dogs that fall into the bully dog category. The most common of these breeds include American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Pit Bull Terriers, American Bull Dogs, and a few others. Each of these breeds of dogs has distinct characteristics, yet each are commonly lumped into the same category of “pit bull”. Breed identification can be tricky business since there are no fail proof tests. Consequently, since there is no way to determine which breed of bully dog they really are, often times any dog with short hair and a square head are thrown into the catch-all category of “pit bull”. Add into the mix the irresponsible back-yard breeders, who, just to make a quick buck, will breed anything with four legs and call it a “pit bull”, and the accurate identification of distinct bully breeds becomes nearly impossible.

Pit bulls are bought, sold and traded with no consideration for the dogs’ health needs or safety. This disposable attitude toward these dogs has infected our society and has caused the people of Indianapolis to look the other way when faced with the horrific conditions these dogs endure. After all, these dogs are dangerous and mean, right? Wrong. |

What does that tell us? Pit bulls are getting a bum deal and they deserve better. That is where Indy Pit Crew comes in! We are dedicated to ending dog fighting, pit bull overpopulation and the awful treatment these dogs are often subjected to. Public education is essential. Without the support of the community and the insistence that pit bulls are cared for the same way we expect people to care for their Labradors and Chihuahuas, these dogs will never have a chance at a better life. It doesn't matter if you like pit bulls or not, it doesn’t even matter if you like dogs or not, you can help. It is not acceptable to keep a pit bull (or any dog) chained up 24 hours a day. It is not acceptable to fight pit bulls (or any dog). And it is certainly not acceptable to mistreat pit bulls just because they are “pit bulls”. Tell your family, neighbors and friends that they are responsible for the proper care and treatment of their dogs. Nobody ever gets a dog by accident. Dogs do not fall from the sky. It is conscious choice to buy/adopt/breed a dog. People are responsible for the choices they make. So, the next time you see a pit bull, consider this…the REAL monster at the end of the chain may very well be the two-legged one responsible for the dog’s abuse, neglect and torment. |
